Safari Fusion featured on MadeByGirl

MadeByGirl: Design: African Fusion
"Lately, I have been inspired by more exotic animals like rams and peacocks, which have been styled to be more glam than safari. Here are my picks for an African fusion look:"

Six Yards

Safari Fusion blog | Six Yards | Celebrating the Dutch textiles of Vlisco
I don't think I will ever tire of viewing and collecting African fabrics, the colours and patterns are just so interesting and beautiful.

Recently the MMKA (Museum Voor Moderne Kunst Arnhem) in the Netherlands held the exhibition Six Yards, celebrating the Dutch textiles of Vlisco.
"...over a hundred years old, born in Indonesia, designed in the Netherlands, loved in Africa, and desired in the West. These colourful fabrics make their way to fashion shows in Paris, the markets in Ghana, and galleries in London and New York."

Queen of the jungle

Safari Fusion blog | Queen of the jungle | The incredible African lion
I love the African lion, however I have found over the years they are one of the hardest animals to photograph.

When I look back through all my lion pictures, most are shots of them sleeping with a full belly (from a hunt that I missed!); legs splayed in a way that they look almost placid enough to pat. Then they do the odd stretch, stand up and lie back down giving you false hope that something is actually going to happen.

For all the sleeping lion photos I have, there is that unique moment (not always captured by the camera) that reminds me of how special and powerful these creatures are.

Zanzibar dreaming

Safari Fusion blog | Zanzibar dreaming | Tanzania safari retreat Kilindi Zanzibar
I have had a fun week so far, holiday planning for later this year and a return trip to Africa for early 2013.

Even though I will not be making it to Zanzibar on my next Africa trip, it is always on the top of my list to return to one day and just maybe stay in one of those beautiful coastal villas.

The gorgeous hideaway of Kilindi Zanzibar ticks all the boxes; white washed walls and simple organic design set against the backdrop of the Indian Ocean. It is the perfect exotic location to relax, unwind and indulge (and is most definitely on the list!).

Botanical fossil sculptures

Safari Fusion blog | Botanical fossil sculptures | Botanical bronze castings by South African Nic Bladen
With flowers on my mind from Mother's Day yesterday, I thought it would be appropriate to share with you the intricate and incredible botanical works of South African sculpture, Nic Bladen.

With skills in dental technology and bronze casting, Nic creates spectacular art pieces by fossilising and preserving entire plants, seed pods and flowers using lost wax casting.

A thing of beauty they also serve a purpose of documenting rare species of flora from the Cape Floral Kingdom.

Nic's works have been exhibited in New York, Chicago and locally in South Africa.

To view more, visit the Nic Bladen website.

Kenya's boda-boda taxis

Safari Fusion blog | Kenya's boda boda taxis | Traditional & colourful bike transportation in East Africa
These colourful Kenyan bicycle taxis called boda-boda, sure inspire you to jump on your bike and get peddling.

Part of East African culture, boda-boda taxis are an economical form of transportation that started back in the 1960s and 70s as a means of transporting people across the no-man's land at the Kenyan Ugandan border without having to worry about vehicle paperwork.

The bicycle owners would shout out "boda-boda" (border-to-border) to potential customers.
